Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams for being nominated in the Yachine Trophy of the Ballon d’Or awards.
In a stellar season where he helped Bafana Bafana to an AFCON bronze medal, Williams becomes the first African goalkeeper to be nominated for the award.
Goalkeeper of the tournament at the AFCON, goalkeeper of the inaugural African Football League tournament, and PSL Goalkeeper and Player of the Season in 2023/24.
It is a great honor for Brooks to have Williams nominated on the big stage alongside world-class goalkeepers, he said.
Broos told the media, "It's certainly something I'm proud of."
"If one of your players is nominated for the Ballon d'Or, but the other side when you see Ronwen's performances with Sundowns and the national team, especially during the latest AFCON.
I looked a little bit at who he is on the list. For me, he has a chance to win it. But yeah, he's just a South African, and sometimes they look for someone with a bigger name.
When you see Ronwen's performances, I believe he deserves it, and it makes me proud," Broos said.
