Jomo Sono weighed in on the debate surrounding showboating and the continued retirement of Orlando Pirates' jersey number 10, which is currently being worn by Patrick Maswanganyi in the CAF Champions League.
It has been mixed reviews regarding Pirates' decision to give Maswanganyi the number 10 shirt for their Champions League campaign in 2024/25.
This jersey has been worn by only a few players, including Sono, Percy 'Chippa' Moloi, Jomo Sono, King 'Kaizer Matatazela' Mkhwanazi, Blessing 'Killer' Mgidi, and Basil Steenkamp.
During the 2001/02 season, Steve Lekoelea was the last to wear it in a regular season.
It was last worn by Vincent Pule in the continental tournament, who has since joined SuperSport United.
The 'Bra J' shared his thoughts on Maswanganyi's readiness for the famous jersey on Friday at the unveiling of Jomo Cosmos' new sponsorship partner Lucas Batteries.
'He can have the jersey, that's fine,' Sono said.
"I saw him [dancing on the ball] going towards his own goal, and I switched to English football. He was going this way, and Pirates were going that way.
Ezenkosi's coach-chairman said he performed skills to benefit the team while moving forward.
I entertained the crowd, but I didn't go that way when Pirates were going in another direction. I don't think it's wrong, but that's the only time I've seen him.
When I stood on the ball against Kaizer Chiefs, 'Jingles' Pereira followed me all over the field. I dribbled past him, but he went around to hit me. The referee blew the whistle, and I stood on the ball.
As soon as the referee blew the whistle, I stood on top of the ball and took the ball.
The foul had already been blown, so I stood on the ball. Otherwise, I wouldn't stand on the ball. I want to move forward all the time."
"He's fine, but don't compare him with me because you've compared a lot of them [with me] in the past and they 'died'."
An elephant can't be compared to an ant, I was an elephant."
