The Mzansi football legend, Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane, who wore number 10 at Durban Bush Bucks in his heyday, has weighed in on Jomo Sono's comments directed at Patrick Maswanganyi.
Sono, himself regarded as one of the greatest to have graced local soccer fields, recently told the media, during the announcement of Jomo Cosmos' new sponsorship partnership with Lucas Batteries, that being compared to them was "like comparing an ant to an elephant".
Guessing is not allowed.
Pirates' number 10 jersey has been retired in honour of the club's former playmaker, but some of the club's fans are demanding that it be handed over to the new poster boy, Maswanganyi.
Ngubane, who played during the Sono era, says no Buccaneer has been able to emulate the 'Black Prince', as the Cosmos chairman is fondly remembered.
In conversation with KickOff, Ngubane says those who think the number 10 should go to Tito clearly haven't seen Jomo play.
"Tito is a good player, but he is nowhere near Mjomana. He shouldn't be compared with Mjomana.
"Mjomana brought excitement to every game he played. Pirates still haven't found a jersey number 10. Mjomana was always busy. He always had trouble on the field. Maswanganyi's efforts sometimes didn't result in results.
There were times when three defenders were assigned to Mjomana, but still, he'd dribble through all of them and find a way out," he says.
Maswanganyi is not extraordinary, though he is talented, but Mofokeng is extraordinary, he is gifted.
