Fleurs was shot in the chest while waiting to be attended to at a petrol station in a Johannesburg suburb, police say.

Police officials confirm that Luke Fleurs, a former junior international for South Africa's most popular club Kaizer Chiefs, was killed in an attempted hijacking in Johannesburg.

A 24-year-old man was shot in the chest at a petrol station on Wednesday night, and his assailants fled in his car.

He was confronted by two armed men while waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said on Thursday.

During the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Fleurs played every minute for South Africa, and that same year, he was called up to the senior team for World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia, though he didn't make it off the bench.

"We woke up to the heartbreaking and devastating news of this young man's passing. This is such a huge loss for his family, friends, teammates, and football as a whole. We are all grieving over the loss of such a young man," said South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan.
