In the Betway Premiership, we see some veteran stars take to the stage alongside some of the brightest young talents from the local game.
We list the oldest and youngest players attached to Betway Premiership clubs ahead of kickoff on 14 September, while the transfer window remains open. With goalkeepers dominating the list of oldest players, SuperSport United's 36-year-old Bradley Grobler is the oldest outfield player among confirmed squads. Grobler will turn 37 in January.
THE OLDEST
Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns)
Born: May 15, 1985 (39)
The experienced glovesman continues to play for Sundowns, acting as a backup for Ronwen Williams. He was called upon to play earlier this season, resulting in a red card during the 1-0 victory against Polokwane City in the MTN8. He holds the impressive record for most domestic league titles with 11, and his tally is still growing. The Ugandan has been in South Africa for 19 seasons now, beginning at SuperSport United where he also claimed a league title before temporarily joining Mpumalanga Black Aces. Sundowns has been his home since 2011.
Hugo Nyamé (Royal AM)
Born: April 16, 1986 (38)
With the FIFA ban imposed on Royal AM, it is assumed Nyame will remain with the club this season. A Cameroon international, he started 18 of the club's 30 league games last season as a member of the Royal Eagles. He has been with the club since its previous incarnations as Royal Eagles back in 2017-18 season.
THE YOUNGEST
Emile Witbooi (Cape Town City)
Born: August 28, 2008 (16)
Having starred in the Diski Challenge competition last season, Witbooi, the son of former Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Surprise Ralani, has gained a lot of popularity in recent months. Though he is currently playing for the South African Under-17 team in the six nations tournament in the Ivory Coast, City coach Eric Tinkler is expected to consider him in this campaign, after spending pre-season with the first team.
Joseph Maphaga (Sekhukhune United)
Born: September 22, 2007 (16)
In the Nedbank Cup last season, Maphaga played for Highlands Park against Sekhukhune United and impressed so much that the club signed him. The winger might have to wait for a first-team place, but has a bright future ahead of him.
Lucky Muthewi (SuperSport United)
Born: February 25, 2007 (17)
The youngster made his debut for SuperSport last season when he came on for another teenager, Shandre Campbell in a 3-1 Nedbank Cup win over Richards Bay. At 17 years old, he played five times for Matsatsantsa in the MTN8. He also played off the bench in the first game of the new season. There is no doubt that Coach Gavin Hunt sees a role for him in this league.
