In order to achieve his dream of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher may have to leave Liverpool.
After starting for his country against England 2-0 in the Nations League on Saturday, the 25-year-old is number two at Anfield – where Arne Slot has replaced Jurgen Klopp as manager – behind Brazilian Alisson Becker, but his future appears uncertain with Giorgi Mamardashvili due to arrive on Merseyside next summer.
"I made it clear in the last few years, I want to be a number one and play week in, week out," Kelleher said ahead of Ireland's match against Greece on Tuesday.
From the outside, it appears that the club decided to go in a different direction by getting another goalkeeper.
"My ambition has always been to play week after week as a number one.
"From the outside looking in, it may seem as if it's 100 percent my decision, but it's not always.
After Alisson suffered a hamstring injury last season, Kelleher made 26 appearances for the Reds and was a two-time Carabao Cup winner with them.
After Nottingham Forest rejected a series of bids during the summer, he was linked with a move away in January.
During the summer, Kelleher came close to leaving the Reds: "My mission was to play well and be the number one.".
It has been reported that Liverpool has rejected a few bids as well. It is not always in my hands to make the decision. My ambition is to prove I am good enough to play week in and week out."
