Until the end of the year, no firm decision will be made on the best course of action.
Several sources close to the task force previously told the PA news agency that the project involves far more than just building a new stadium and would represent Europe's most ambitious regeneration project.
On Monday, United announced the club would be represented on an advisory team looking at how a new or redeveloped stadium can spark wider social and economic regeneration. United said Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) are also involved in the new partnership.
United said the team would be led by an independent director aligned with the task force and the Trafford Wharfside redevelopment plan.
The goal of this once-in-a-generation project is not only to build a world-class stadium in the north of England, but also to bring broad social and economic benefits to the local area.
To create a national significance project, Trafford Wharfside regeneration could be connected to Media City's ongoing growth and Greater Manchester's Western Gateway and Central Growth Cluster plans. This incredibly exciting potential will be fully unlocked by the tripartite advisory team.”
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: "Greater Manchester has a much stronger claim to be the biggest football city-region on the globe. Few places can match our heritage and our global influence."
Old Trafford's future is the next chapter of that story, and we have the chance now to write it well."
In February, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe estimated the regeneration project would cost £2 billion.
A new stadium could be a northern rival to Wembley, and Ratcliffe said it should receive some taxpayer funding in the past.
If you reach the FA Cup semi-finals and you're a northern club, don't you have to travel to London?," he added in February.
There is an argument that you could consider a more ambitious project in the north that would be fitting for England, for the Champions League final or the FA Cup final, and act as a catalyst to regenerate southern Manchester, which has an incredible history in the UK.
