Sergi Roberto, a veteran and former captain of Barcelona, joined Serie A newcomers, Como, this summer. The Spanish defender recently revealed that he was offered opportunities in the Premier League but chose the Italian club instead.
Announcing his decision to leave Camp Nou, Roberto received several offers from Spain, the Middle East, other European countries, as well as Serie A and the Premier League.
Roberto, however, decided to join Como after speaking with its new coach, Cesc Fàbregas.
Having him as our coach is a great honor for us.
He was one of the best players in the world, and now I can't wait to start my coaching career with him. I'm confident we'll benefit from each other's experience.
After my first conversation with Fàbregas, I understood the ambitions of this club. I had offers from Spain, the Middle East, other European countries, as well as Serie A and the Premier League.
Despite my desire to remain in Serie A, I appreciate Cesc's coaching, as well as the beauty of Como, which influenced my decision," Roberto told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
As a reminder, Cesc Fàbregas has been with Como for the past year. He was appointed head coach of the U-19 team on July 1, and he was promoted to interim head coach on November 13. As soon as Osian Roberts became the interim head coach, Fàbregas became his assistant. As a result of the team's success, in which Fàbregas played a significant role, Como appointed him as their head coach on July 19, 2024.
