Newey is set to start working for Aston Martin in 2025; the legendary designer's departure from Red Bull was confirmed in May; Newey has led the design of 13 Red Bull titles since joining in 2006. The next F1 race is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 13-15, live on Sky Sports F1.

Aston Martin close in on Newey deal

Legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey is set to join Aston Martin in 2025 following his departure from Red Bull.

After an apparent breakdown in his relationship with the team principal Christian Horner, the 65-year-old left his role as Red Bull's chief technical officer in May. As part of his contract with the company, he will work on the RB17 until early 2025.

Newey is expected to start at Aston Martin in March 2025 and earn $26 million (£19.8 million) a year.

When approached by Sky Sports News, Aston Martin refused to comment, but it is understood Newey's move will be confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday.

He bowls at a high pace, is a very skilled bowler, and has shown he is more than just a fast bowler.

In joining Aston Martin, Newey will work with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and will play an important role in the design of their 2026 car, which will be the first season with new regulations.

With Red Bull in 2022, Newey demonstrated that he can design a race-winning F1 car when regulations change.

Why would Newey join Aston Martin?

With his 34th century for England at Lord's, Joe Root broke Alastair Cook's record for most Test centuries for England.

The team's best result in 2024 so far has been Alonso's fifth-place finish at the second-round Saudi Arabian GP, and both of their cars finished outside the points last time out at Monza.

Aston Martin and Honda have sealed a deal for the 2026 season when the first set of technical regulations come into effect. According to Alonso, this partnership offers the strongest prospects for Aston Martin's future success.

In 2026, Honda will provide Aston Martin with a power unit for the first season of the new technical regulations. Previously, Alonso has praised the team for having the best project for the future. Last year, the Silverstone-based team opened a new factory and acquired a new wind tunnel, showcasing their determination to excel in F1. They added Dan Fallows from Red Bull in 2022, who played a crucial role in Sebastian Vettel's four consecutive titles from 2010-2013. This reunites Fallows with his former colleague Newey. Joining Aston Martin would also allow Newey to remain in the United Kingdom, unlike if he were to join Ferrari which may require him to relocate to Italy.

Sky Sports Formula One reporter discusses where Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey could be plying his trade next year.
